Having talented and highly-trained match officials is vital to a successful football league. That’s why we have appointed a new group of 18 full-time referees.

We’ve doubled the number of officials who can give full-time focus to football. Former PE teacher Tim Robinson from West Sussex is one of the newly-appointed Select Group 2 referees who will mainly work in the Football League Championship, whilst being on a pathway to refereeing in the Premier League.

The Premier League’s investment in the system is definitely helping me enhance my skills.”

While Tim says he’ll miss the challenge of teaching, he’s ready to immerse himself in his new career, “This is a new challenge and to be part of this new adventure is fantastic and one I can't wait to start. The big difference for me is being able to manage my refereeing more professionally without having to prepare for a full day's work at school. I can train harder and prepare better for matches in a more professional manner.

“I'm also looking forward to having a closer link with clubs, going in and working with them and hopefully building really positive relationships which will then make it easier to work with them on the pitch.”

Tim also knows that being in the middle of the on-pitch action comes with a big responsibility, “As referees we all take great pride in our work and it's important for us to be accountable for our actions, so we constantly improve. I’ve been able to work with some fantastic people, which has really helped me to learn and develop. The Premier League’s investment in the system is definitely helping me enhance my skills.”
